I have a 5x8 quaker style coop with 2 windows in front & a large vent in back. Only the top 1/2 of the windows open.

- in the winter do I want to keep both of my windows open all the time?

It depends on the prevailing winds, coop location, litter used and a number of variables. If you smell ammonia you need more ventilation but you don't want a draft.

That's true. They don't use a toilet like we do, so their situation would be different; I could see them needing one window cracked open. :)

How many birds?
How many square feet of ventilation will you have in the winter?

Rule of thumb, 1 square foot of draft free ventilation per bird.
Draft free means you do not want to ruffle the birds feathers.

Remember, dry is more important than warm in winter.

It depends a great deal on where you are located. Which is where......approximately?

Which direction do the windows open? North, south, east or west?
