Coop windows

How many windows should be in a 4 x 8 coop?
Welcome to BYC.
Is it a walk in style?
Where are you located in the world? That can make a difference.
I like lots of natural light and air flow.
I recommend top hinged windows as they can be left open during rain without water getting in the coop.

Using windows for light only or ventilation? You should have additional ventilation up higher than roosts, so that there aren’t drafts on the birds.

we don’t know your climate either -where are you located, in general? any weather or temp extremes?

if your windows are your only source of ventilation, then you need to position them so the roost area is not drafty. Or have enough that in extreme or stormy weather you can close some to minimize drafts On the birds.

we gave lots of upper ventilation. We have one window that stays open nearly year round. That window faces a different direction away from the roosts, so it’s good. If we are getting very stormy or extreme cold weather, then we close The window.

We are in Montgomery County, a suburb of Philadelphia, Pa. Yes, it is a walk in. There will be top ventilation. Also thinking about adding a skylight. Thank you for your tips.

I had one window on the north side of my 8' x 12' walk-in coop and had plenty of light for me and the chickens to see well enough to do what we needed to do. But I also had hardware cloth over openings at the top of all four walls. Those also let in a lot of light.

I think there is personal preference in this. I personally prefer a darker coop, I think it is more soothing. Others prefer a brightly lit coop. I don't think the chickens themselves care that much. If you can see well enough to work in there the chickens will have enough light to find the nests too. At night, they need enough light to find the roosts when it starts getting dark outside. This one is harder to judge. If they want to sleep in the run this could be the issue.

I like a lot of light so I'd personally pack in as many windows as possible. I have 5 on a 6x10 coop, maxxed out the wall space on 3 walls. Could've added another to completely eat up wall space on the 4th wall, kinda wish I did!

The nice thing about windows that open... you can always close them... but you can also open them!

If you get very hot summers, it is nice to be able to let the air blow through the coop... but in the summer only.
