Coop without run

yeah, I think when my wife agreed to them she thought we might lose some along the way....but not yet...and that is good since we are getting attached to them in a way......I will rethink the size and the run.

haha.. You don't realize how big they get and how fast!

I had to extend my run 3 times because my chickens would start beating each other up...
And I only had 5!...

If you keep all 16, you'll definitely need a run.

I have 17 in my 8x8 coop and I feel like they will be over-crowded when they're full grown (if they didn't have a run, that is).

What I really need to do is get rid of most of my roos (I have at least 5...not good). I keep telling my kids that the roos will be soup some day, but they're completely horrified by the idea.

Maybe one of my neighbors will be having chicken soup, on us!

Ours is 3-sided with a run attached:

Our coop is 5' x 7 1/2' and we used a dog run purchased from craigslist (7 1/2' x 13') for the run. Chickens love to scratch the ground and take dustbaths, both of which would be hard to do if kept inside a coop all day.

Whatever you do, Don't build your first coop like I did. I built this elaborte 8'x12' coop and decided not to do a run. Well just as soon as the paint dried on the walls my father came over and asked "so where are the windows". It was my first Homer Simpson Moment all I could say was D'oh.
