Since no one else will chime in, I'll give you my 2 cents worth. Plastic or steel will be very cold during the winter. You would have to insulate very well. Of course, if you have very harsh winters, your wood one will have to be insulated also. As everyone else has said - look through all the coops on here. There are some very nice ones made out of scrounged materials. Use your imagination.

Sorry i just really need to know because the chicks cant stay in their brooder forever!! (but you already knew that)

Have you looked at Horizon Structures or some of the other sponsors? I bought one on ebay and wish I had gone with Horizon Structures or better known and established company. Mine was made and assembed in PA and shipped across the country to CA. Some places do deliver. Have you checked craigslist?

Otherwise, I would buy a shed and pay a contractor to come out and do your modifications. Find one you like on this website, print out the pix and description and then just hire someone to do it. I'm not sure about the cedar wood for the structure. Definitely not shavings for the bedding. Why not go for something cheaper anyway? You can stain it or paint it. Just make sure any wood you're using that touches the ground is treated and that if you use plywood, that it's rated for outdoors.

Cedar is OK for the building if its an older one and has lots of ventilation as the oils in cedar can be detrimental to their health. There is a local company that makes coops out of cedar but they do have tons of ventilation. Have you checked craigslist? There often are folks who sell or build per your request. I would stay away from the cedar shavings as bedding though as they can actually be quite toxic--especially to young birds.

you can go to lowes if there is one near you or a home depot and get a 10 x 8 shed for 298 and convert it that is what i did and atached a 16 x 16 run to it i posted a pic below

its nothing extravigant but it ddes its job and my chickens are hapy the coop hold up to 20 chickens and the run about 25 i wish i had one like alot of other people on here but with money tight i had to go simple and cheaper i wish i would of at least bought a bigger shed becasue now i know i will want more chickens once this coop is completely occupied but next summer hopefuly i will build another one and attache it to this one all together i paid about 600 for all of it
