Thank you for all the responses! They do come into the secure pen on their own each night, so they are safe from predators (at least they have been for the last 7 months). They just don't go in the insulated coop that is within that pen. They do go in their boxes in that coop to lay their eggs during the day. They free range during the day for a few hours when I can keep an eye on them, but they come back to the secure pen either on their on or when I call them.
So, my big concern is keeping them warm at night. I think it is all set up with proper housing and wind breaks...they just don't use it at night. Funny chickens!
I have so much fun with them that I would feel terrible if I didn't prepare them for winter.
