Coops and Rain..HELP!

I bought a bag of kitty litter at the dollar tree for, you guessed it, $1. I read the bag and it's clay, maybe DE, and nothing else. No fragrance. It's small granules like kitty litter, and I was using it for something or other...maybe using it in the coop? I'm embarrassed to admit I wanted it powder-y so tried driving over the bag, crushing it in an old coffee grinder and hammering on it with a mallet. Like I said, I'm embarrassed. I'm only admitting it to you guys lol.
But it's a buck for a 5# bag!!! Thanks for the reminder - here I was making the suggestion to the OP and forgot I'd used it myself...embarrassed again embarrassed face palm emoji.jpg

Hi @aart -
How long does it take you to go through a 40# bag? I will be stocking up soon, and just curious - though I'm sure it varies per setup - how long it lasts for folks.
Ehhhh, not really sure...2-3-4 months, seems to vary throughout the year, last years records show I bought 3(might have actually been 4) bags.

So I grabbed some pallets and put them over about 60 percent of the coop. Afterwards I went and mowed my grass and cleared out a very overgrown area in my yard. Cleaned up the clippings and dumped them in the coop for a brief reprieve from the wet ground. Will definitely be looking at horse pellets and whatever DLM is. I reckon the horse pellets a likely candidate considering the positive posting here. Also plan to revamp the coops quality overall. Ran comes in from cracks in the roof and this unacceptable at the current rate. Leslielblk awesome posting. Thanks all. I have some other questions but they are unrelated to this original topic so I think in have to make a new post??

that depends, why not rattle them off here first? I'm expanding my coop, basically duplicating it so it will be a mirror image of the one I have and I'm going to put them together. Because I had to do so much caulking I am this time going to caulk in between each board before I assemble it. Caulk, screw, caulk, screw, repeat. My challenge will be to solve the matching up of the corrugated aluminum roof. I'm thinking of expanded foam to fill in the gaps and a big aluminum cap. DLM is deep litter method. There are a lot of proponents both pro and con here. I'm so glad you found a few solutions. This is a great place to get those.
The caulk I use is G.E. waterproof, uv proof and mold proof. It has a lifetime guarantee LOL Don't know how you would prove that.
