Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. You've received some good advice from the other members. If you're considering Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks, why not combine the best of both and get some Black Sex Links (Black Stars). They are available at most hatcheries, and are bred by crossing a Rhode Island Red rooster with a Barred Rock hen, and the chicks can be sexed at hatching (boys are whitish, girls are reddish). They are egg laying machines, outlaying either parent breed, and are friendlier and more docile than either parent breed (one of the interesting quirks of hybridization). I have raised Black Sex Links for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they have consistently been my best layers. Please feel free to ask if you have any more questions.
