copperheads

A lot of people mistakenly identify snakes. I have noticed that my neighbors commonly identify anything that slithers (especially young rat snakes) as copperheads. That could be what is going on with your neighbors as well.

He may be but I DO know what Copperheads look like and have had to kill my fair share of them for bothering thing. We had one kill a pup. Another tried to bite my other son. Had our oldest dog get bit in the face by one. Her face swelled so big it scared our youngest son. I felt so bad for both of them that time. Anyway the last one I saw was an Osage Copperhead.

Wasn't inferring that you were the one who was mistakenly identifing the snakes, just trying to come up with an answer for an increased population and your neighbors saying that they had seen more but your not having seen such and increase yourself.

That being said, it sounds like you really do have and over abundance of them on your property. If I had that many copperheads around, I would be looking into relocating some king snakes onto my property to help keep them inline. Another thing you might look into is taking a close look at your property and identifying the things that make it such a good habitat for them and making some changes to make it a little less inviting. Good luck to you! Hope you can figure something out before one of your children or pets are hurt again.

can you hear me now?,

Are you located near a south south-west facing hillside with trees that might have some brush piles? Those are typical surroundings for pit viper den sights. They will be coming from a couple miles around to den up.

Arkansas here. I have only lived in the country for four years. My husband has lived in this house for 30. I had seen a few snakes up until this year.

Black snake in the garden and in the garage.

Then we built the chicken coop. Was walking out to feed one day and one brushed across my foot. I recognized it to be a copperhead instantly because I had been online searching for snakes that were in this area. Grabbed a shovel and took care of the snake. Then screamed for my husband. No snake was going to get my chickens if I could stop it!!

That said....that is the only one I have personally seen this year.

Sorry, I wasn't trying for that post to look bad. Just wanted to emphasize that I knew.

No worries, I didn't take it that way, just wanted to make sure that you didn't take my post in a negitive way. It's really hard to convey emotion on a blog at times.

We had a bumper year for snakes. Due to the heat I didn't see as many during the day as I had in the past but they were out in droves in the evening and early morning. The chicken snakes were playing havoc with the egg production. I've caught 7 so far. I had to deal with numerous copperheads and rattlers in my garden this year because there was shade and a sprinkler to keep them cool. There was also a huge number of voles nibbling on the greens so I didn't mind too much. I just had to be careful when I was picking the veggies, especially the squash. We had 8" of rain Sunday and Monday and the remnants of Nicole passed by Thursday so we are flooded everywhere. I caught 2 copperheads and a rattler in the driveway this morning within about 2 hours. I guess they didn't like swimming in the woods where it is still flooded. I am really ready for the cold weather to set in to send them into hibernation.

I can see where that would be a good thing. I think I will try to relocate some king snakes to this area next year and see if it helps any or not. if not i will abandon my shovel for a shotgun.
