we live on a farmstead and the field next to the coop has been recently harvested , would it be ok to gather corn husks, stalks and cobs for bedding in the coop?
also at the moment, we only have 2 chickens in our coop, it is very large (garage) is there anything I need to do to keep them warm in such an open area

warm is relative.. If you tell me you are in northern canada and minus 30F is normal probably... Do you get snow? do they have roost near the roof? How old are they? chickens put on down like ducks to stay warm as adults.

Welcome to BYC!
The husks might make decent bedding, but it won't keep them 'warm'.
Their feathers keep them warm, if you keep the coop dry and free of too strong drafts especially near the roost area.
Part of keeping them dry is having good ventilation to release moist and ammonia laden air from the coop.

If you post pics of your coop, inside and out, we can help you make it ready for winter.
Knowing your location really helps,
putting in your profile is easy and then it's always there. :D
