Okay folks, I got these guys a week ago yesterday and they were supposed to be 3 days old when I got them. The woman I got them from didn't have a clue what they were. I figured free was a good price so I took them. She was a teacher and they got the eggs from 4-H to hatch for the classroom and she said they weren't layers. That's all she could tell me. Are these guys Cornish Crosses or some kind of meat birds? If not, anybody know what they might be? They seem to be growing super fast compared to the last little bunch of chicks I had (my first), but I could be imagining things.

Thanks in advance,
Jenna

That would be my guess - the legs do look pretty thick on the one you're holding. I believe cornish crosses grow very quickly, but are also slow to feather out - keep watching and it should become obvious very soon if they are cornish X.

Looks like the ones we raise. Thick legs and very very quick developement.
This was a teacher that did not know??? Dang shame.
Process ours at 36 days and average 3.5-4 lbs

Start limiting their food to 12 hours on and 12 off now. That is important. We take the feed away at seven at night and give it back at seven in the morning.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the help guys. Now I don't have to order any meat chicks! This will be our first adventure in raising meat chickens, but we really love the idea of knowing how our food was fed and raised and knowing they had good quality of life before providing for us. Guess I better keep reading in the Meat Birds section. I've been reading it alot already since we decided we wanted to give them a try. Again, thanks for all the help!

Jenna
