That must be the problem. I checked with the local feed store and Tractor Supply and all they had was the regular chick feed, 16-18% I think. The only feed higher than that is a small 5lbs bag of game bird/showbird 24% feed that I use to start my turkey, peafowl, quail, and guinea babies on. And it's like $9 per 5lb bag, so it's not very realistic to raise broilers on.

You need protein in a meat bird to start with or be free ranging so they can eat bugs. They only need it for a couple weeks but without it they are hurting units. They cannot get proper bone and organ development on 16%.

I use Gamebird starter on all my chicks. 24% I think it is.

If they are bored they will pick on the weak ones for fun...Think of them as Junior High kids....

BTW I always warn people to not fall down around the chickens or they will swarm and eat you, starting with your eyes and butt...

That's what I said! Everyone says hogs will eat farmers, but I know for sure if I passed out in a pen full of those broilers I would definitely be a goner!

They want protein, and they know where to get it. They might even be a little fat from the lower protein feed.

Better than I thought, I thought you said same as the layer feed.
