Cornish Rocks in Tractor Supply

Maybe next time you go to TS you should give him byc's website.. tell him to educate himself before talking out the wrong end.

There was a lady and her kids at our feed store the other day wanting birds for eggs. They were completely upfront about it and were standing by the bin they wanted the birds from. The helpful employee was getting the chick box ready to help them get their "Fryers" out.

DD and I set them straight about how many eggs they could expect and directed them to the "Pullets", "Cherry-Eggers" and "Rainbow Layers". Honestly though I don't know who was more to blame, the clerk or the customer. I thought the chicks were pretty clearly labeled even for a chicken newbie. There was more explanation below the main label as well.

At least the employee didn't argue with me. That would have frosted me I think. Still unsure if I did the right thing or not. I would complain to the manager in your case for a whole host of reasons. No matter what he knew or thought he knew you shouldn't have been berated. You weren't even costing them a sale or probably any money (meatbirds sell cheapest here) so if I were the employee, I'd have shut up and not said a thing, even if I thought you were wrong. Also, because there is a real difference or major limitation as it were in what you can expect with CX, that needs to be explained to all the employees there. A BR vs an Orpington vs a RIR, etc will be pretty interchangeable for most people, but a CX is a whole other beast.

I agree that the lady should have done a bit more homework before going out and buying chicks. That man just didn't want to admit that he didn't know - so he acted like a smug, know-it-all, jerk. I was pretty steamed. I just smiled at him and said it was good that he knew so much about chickens, especially since he had never had them. I told him that I had never had pigs before, but I was an expert in raising them. I definitely didn't cost TS a penny. I just wanted to save that child some heartbreak when her "pets" started dying off in a couple of months.

We'll see if the corporate office even bothers to call me back. I don't like buying from TS anymore than I have to. I was only in there yesterday because Southern States and the local feed store didn't have what I wanted and TS did. I'll be limiting my visits there even more than I already have !!!

I spoke up right away at the feed store I think because of the kids too. I might have just quietly chuckled to myself for awhile had it just been the woman. IDK. I don't think I'd have let her leave the store with a box of roos, knowing she wanted layers without saying something. Well, at least my # and a note to call in 3-4 months.

Like I said, no matter. According to what you say he said he knew and was so sure of, your advice had zero chance of negatively affecting the outcome for the store or the other customer. He didn't need to say anything at all. Even had what you said had the potential to negatively affect the other customer, he could have handled things better. He could have politely explained things to the other customer back at the bins while "exchanging" the chicks without saying boo to you. Making both a trip to the register and following outside just to carry on an argument is out of bounds, to add berating and name calling into the mix is beyond nuts.

I just bought 12 "Red Broiler" chicks from the local farm store. Employees there are really hit or miss on chicken education. I have had better luck at the local store. I am more familiar with laying and dual purpose breeds. I told her I wanted Red Broilers and they charged me for Red Broilers. When I asked why they were so light in color, the two employees assured me they were indeed Red Broilers. After I got home, I looked up pics of both Cornish Rock and Red Broiler chicks. Sure enough, these are Cornish X.

I went back today and bought two real Red Broilers so I will have something to compare to along the way. I really did not want to risk the Cornish on my first meatie go round, but at least I saved money. When I bought the two RB today, the person who helped me was different from the help on Saturday - but at checkout I ran into the same girl. I told her that she had sold me Cornish instead of RB. She was shocked. But, I thanked her since the RB were 50 cents less, and they were on sale, so I got the 12 Cornish X birds for $1.80 each. She looked a little stunned.

Now, I just hope the Welsummer chicks I bought are really Welsummers. They sure look like the Ameraucanas that are just a week or so older....
