Pure LF Dark Cornish Pullet 3 pounds 5.9 ounces at 12.5 weeks of age.
1/2 Dark Cornish 1/2 Cornish Rock Pullet - 5 pounds 4.9 ounces at 7.5 weeks.

The Dark Cornish are very slow to grow, but I found when crossing these inbred/show bred/line-bred birds with another meat type line, the offspring have hybrid vigor or heterosis.

When a population is inbred, it loses genetic diversity. Inbreeding depression is the loss of genetic diversity. It results in smaller, slower growth, less eggs, etc... Inbred strains tend to be homozygous for recessive alleles. Heterosis or hybrid vigor, on the other hand, is the tendency of out-bred strains to exceed both inbred parents.

Anytime you breed for say just color instead of an overall balanced:color, feather type, temperament, body muscle density, comb style, eye color, and bone. Americans are incredibly fad driven. I am sure loads of faults where bred in when the color craze hit. Those faults may take years to breed out.

One of my dark cornish pullets has gone broody. I've tried to snap her out of it (OK I admit, not that hard, I did try a little though ). She's the least typey of the lot, way too fluffy but that should make for a good broody. I'm SO tempted to stick a few eggs under there............ Someone, PLEASE, quickly, talk me out of it.

In january, not so much.
the little fluff balls are addictive

In January, not so much. Tomorrow I'll try harder- and she'll have to go into a wire bottom cage pretty soon if she's still broody. But I do have a plan "B"- I have some eggs saved that aren't in the fridge. Buckeye and red sex link cross eggs mostly........... what am I thinking????????
