JRNash are you breeding your own cornishX or feed restricting them?

The slow grow CX came from Welp hatchery. extreme emphasis. on SLOW

I know it's better for their health,It just makes me feel cruel.
makes no SENSE,I have no problem processing the birds on camp day.

Can you free range them? That's restricting their feed but they will be busy looking for it. That might not work too well when it gets hot though.

JRNash Im there with you about restricting their food. It makes me feel cruel but I let mine free range as much as possible which seems to cut down on their growth rate. But all that white attracts every predator in the book. Has anyone tried the red or black broilers?

I had Red Rangers. They just paled in comparison to the feed conversion for the White Rock Cross. In fact my Dark Cornish X Cornish Roaster Crosses would be considered slow grow at half the weight of the Cornish Roaster

Pebbles (DOH 10/13/15) was 5 lbs 4.4 oz at 9 weeks 12/16/15. Definitely not a record breaking weight, but a healthy respectable weight. I would say mine are slower growing by half the rate.

My Dark Cornish over Cornish Roaster chicks are a sex-link product. The cockerels are hatched all white and begin to grow red feathers over their wings and back. I have one solid white. They mostly have peacombs, some have straight combs. Pullets have black spots over white. Some turn lavender with black spots, most have peacombs some are straight.

White spotted Pullet and Lavender Pullet. Slate grey legs.
Cock with red shoulders.

I just put 14 eggs worth of F2 & F1 generations into the incubator. Hatch date 2/10/16.

The mixes are:
Redmen over Lavenia

1/2 Dark Cornish 1/2 Cornish Roaster Redmen over the same mixed pullet "Lavenia". Same father different hens. Should net 25% Dark Cornish type, 50% 1/2 & 1/2 type, 25% Cornish Roaster type. Growth rate all over the map from fast to semi fast to slow.

Next cross is Bob over Betty:

1/2 Dark Cornish 1/2 Cornish Roaster "Bob" over Cornish Roaster hen "Betty". Not directly Related. Hens were from the same place( Murray McMurray). Should be 1/4 Dark Cornish 3/4 Cornish Roaster. Semi fast growing white. Faster than my 1/2 & 1/2 crosses.


Next cross is Bob over Marion:

1/2 Dark Cornish 1/2 Cornish Roaster "Bob" over Pure Dark Cornish hen"Marion". Should net 3/4 Dark Cornish 1/4 Cornish Roaster. Semi Slow Grow type. Most likely will be red/black/white or red/black

And my Pure dark Cornish BamBam over Guinevere:

100% LF Dark Cornish. Slow growth

Fingers crossed. I will be plunking in sets of eggs from these crosses every six days until I see what is working vs fail. I rotate my eggs in every six days/candle every six days. After 18 days they are moved out to the still incubator to hatch. Works for me.

lpatelski how did you manage to keep the cornish cross roaster chicks to adulthood? I thought they dropped dead after a couple of months....... ? What is your secret to keeping them alive long enough to reproduce?
That's quite the amazing breeding program you have there!
