Hello,
A friend of mine is raising Cornish X on medicated starter the whole way through. She is going to sell a few to me......and I JUUUSSST want to make sure that it IS safe right? To eat birds that have been on medicated starter?
Thanks for (hopefully) reassuring me..

There is no reason to feed medicated food for the entire lifetime (6 to 10 wks) of a Cornish X. I feed medicated starter for the first 2 weeks max. if the weather warrants it. Otherwise the birds don't live long enough to die from Cocci. Most feeds will recommend at least a 1, if not 2 week withdrawal period from medicated feed before slaughter.

Most feeds contain Amprollium as the medication. It is vitamin based and not an antibiotic. I'd have no problem with eating the birds.

I don't feed medicated feed that long, but perhaps that is the only feed your friend can find with a high enough protein content. In some parts of the country, you feed what you can get and don't have a lot of choices.

I fed my cornish hens non-medicated feed from the start, I didn't have any problems. I was concerned about using medicated feed due to fact that they would be eaten.
