Where we are keeping our broilers, the other birds do not go. There is quite a distance from one area to the other. Do you think if I staked up a temporary fence with some twine and sticks until they get to know their area, that it would keep them in their area? This is my first time with meat chickens. From what I hear is that they do not walk much and have a hard time with a lot of activities. I'm trying to get them more active for their own health's sake and to see if exercising your market birds really makes a difference or not (some families say that it is a must, while others say that it makes no difference).

Thank-you again for all of your help! It is really helping out a LOT!
I am raising CX (4 weeks old) and mine don't have any trouble walking, running around, playing keep away and chasing bugs. I don't feed them 24/7 though. I am trying to encourage them to forage for goodies.

I think alot of the horror stories that you hear are a direct result of the way the person raised these chickens. If you keep them in a small confined space with constant food, they will be stinky, fat and lazy. They are like teenagers. :) If you give them open space and control food, they will go out and act like chickens and hunt for bugs. I almost got a video of one of my CX dustbathing the other day but the dog ran up before I got the camera on.

My chicks love it when friends give us dropped fruit from their trees (ie apples and plums). I toss them out there and they run around playing keepaway and devouring the fruit. Fun, fun!

A temporary fence may be helpful. Mine follow me anywhere. Maybe yours would just follow you where you want them to go? My little group learned where their house is and where safe places are super quick. I have an acre that they range on and they've covered at least half of it. I suspect that by the time they are full grown, they will have explore all of it.
