I came across this site when I was looking for some help for a severely hen pecked buff Orpington chick that we had raised at the children's centre where I work. The simple question to my partner "she can't go back, can we keep her?" has led us to having a whole new way of looking at our back garden.

After a course of antibiotics and her wounds cleaned and healing we had to find a new home for her (the cat box in the porch that served as her coop was getting a bit cramped). A friend offered us her rabbit hutch as a temporary home, so my clever partner added a drawbridge and after a complete spring clean Pansy moved in.

We didn't want her to be a chicken alone so after she had settled we searched for some friends for her......

.....she wasn't very pleased....

.....probably because Agnes (a chick of assorted heritage, on the right) and Igorina ( a sussex crossed with a vulture) were a bit on the ugly side.
We then ordered a new coop for them online and spent a day painting it up and putting it together.

The girls loved it but as they were going to have to spend quite a bit of their day in the run (other members of our family include a dollop of a Labrador, a fat cat and Bob, the terrier who like nothing better than a chicken dinner, so they needed somewhere that was safe.
We also had to make plans that had to include how to make more space them in a garden that was semi-rural and climbed up a hill.
We took the old hutch apart, added some height, an escape hatch, a bridge and a new ladder down to the extension.....

.....the girls love sunning themselves on the bridge (Pansy has spotted a tasty ant snack but is too lazy to get up) and they are all growing like weeds.
I think they agree with the sign below but maybe it should read "No coop like home".

! Great to have you with us! You have some very fortunate chickens! And the home you've made for them is extraordinary. Good luck to you and enjoy your flock!

Thank you - I am just hoping that Pansy will hold her own now. She's a little on the small side but is keeping the other two in check.
