Coronation Split Sussex Roo or Hen?????

They really are nice birds. Maybe some day......*drifts off to chicken daydreams*

Do they have the same temperment as Speckled Sussex? I love my "yard candy", but they are the goofiest of all my breeds.

Very beautiful birds ...
Congratulations

I would say they would be about the same, not sure about any of their temperaments, (this is my first time with any Sussex, the little roo lets me pet him, but not the girl. She hides behind her protector. But, of course they just had probably a pretty rough trip. It started snowing here and got pretty cold. It took a day and a half for them to get here.

If I am thinking right, my pair should produce 25% Coronation offspring. So, I won't have to wait that long. From what the other members have said, I know very little about the color breeding.

Your Welcome. I should have Coronation chicks in about 6 months. It will not take me a complete generation to get them. Say out of 100 chicks hatched, 25 will be Coronation.

Right. The problem with the next generation will be that you will get 25% homozygous regular Columbian, 50% heterozygous regular/Coronation, and 25% Coronation. In adult feathers, you won't be able to tell which ones are heterozygous Coronation, and which are plain regular Columbian. Watch the chick down color carefully, just in case there's a difference in down color -- I dunno if there will be or not!

That is what I am researching now to see if there is a difference. Not sure if their is a way to tell or not.

Very nice Cammy! Congrats!

In my experience in working with splits, I haven't seen a way to identify the ones that carry the lav gene versus the ones that don't, based on chick down. If I were you and your focus is primarily on coronation, then only work with the ones who breed true (once you get there). If you have a lot of space, you could keep the others and match one up to a coronation and do test hatches to identify if they carry the gene or not.
