Coronation Sussex Thread!

Pics
Here are some pics of Hope. She's been pictured here before, b/c it took forever for me to be convinced she's female. Of course I have yet to see her lay an egg.... (still questionable if the mystery egg came from her.)

Because of her early wattles & pink comb, I thought male - along with many others. I emailed pics to the breeder & he said that his line had early pink combs & the males had larger, fast-growing combs. His opinion was that Hope was a female (12 week pic), & I that shouldn't rush into getting rid of the chicken.

I agree that it appears Marthab1953 has a lot of cockerals, but I'm glad that I didn't rehome Hope as planned. I highly recommend asking the opinion of the breeder.

Thanks for the pictures she is very pretty. Makes me more hopeful as i looked at them again and only saw what I thought were only 2 girls. So maybe I might get a few more. Thanks again.

Perhaps I should publicly shame my hens more often. I got another mystery egg today. All my other pullets & hens made an egg today, & there was one extra. It's either from Hope or my EasterEgger. I believe the EE will make greenish eggs like her mom.

I am new to this thread but I am very interested in this breed. I would love to purchase chicks or young birds, but I can not find really any for sale. Does anyone know of anyone selling quality corronations chicks that doesn't mind shipping to Louisiana.
Thanks

Other than googling them or watching things like Craigslist or perhaps SoutheastTexas.com, I don't know what to tell you. We just happened to come across an ad for mine located here locally (north of Houston), but I don't recall seeing any advertised other than them. Mine haven't laid since last summer, but I'm hoping that's due to molt & maybe just not being winter layers. I'm giving them until this spring & if they don't start laying, as much as I hate it, they'll be gone. I have several breeds of chickens, & I do this as a hobby, but to also hopefully make a little money selling them and/or eggs, so as beautiful as these Coronations are, I can't afford to have them just for looks. If these don't work out, I may be looking for more myself. If I come across any, I can let you know on here. Good luck.

Maybe look into these:

Chicken Scratch Poultry
BJ's Poultry
(both of these carry lines from Greenfire Farms, which you may also check out)
Agreed--I purchased hatching eggs from BJs Poultry and they all hatched. We had a dog vs. chick incident and only one has survived to point of lay, but all 4 eggs he shipped turned out to be females.

Just found this thread. So excited to talk with others who love this breed! I purchased mine in July of 2014 from Chicken Scratch Poultry. I was blessed with 1 nice looking roo and 3 hens, unfortunately a barn owl got to one of my hens and I have just two left. But I am excited to breed them and get some more. I love that they are dual purpose and they look like they will make a nice bird for the table. I am trying to find out what the time table is from hatch to table for this breed, so if anyone knows please I would love to find out. We do not want to do the Cornish crosses and other meat birds like that. We found out that the Delaware's were the king of this till the Cornish crosses came on the scene. The Delaware I think said reach hatch to table in 16 weeks. I bet the Coronation Sussex has to be real close to that. Anyway I would love info, so please help if you can.

Found some light sussex with good shape. My question is what color can you expect breeding a light hen to a coronation rooster? Which type would they likely take after, hen or rooster? Thanks

With a Lavender Orpington x Black Orpington, the offspring would be black/lav splits (look black but also carry the lav gene). My guess is the Sussex would work in a similar way. All the offspring would look like the light Sussex with it's black collar..

If we then breed the black/lav split Orp back to the lavender, then 50% would be lavender & 50% would look black. If you breed the black/lav split to another black/lav split, 75% would look black & 25% would be lavender (even though both parents are black). Genetics are fun. There are so many other variables & new genetic material should be added to avoid lots of inbreeding. In Lav Orps, many breeders do this process to get better feather quality down the line.

What I want to know is what would a Lavender Orpington x Coronation Sussex look like? (My only roo is a Lav Orp, but I don't have the room to add more chicks.) Has anyone ever tried hatching CS mixes with other breeds? I wonder what a CS x polish with its top hat would look like?
