Correct dosage Ivomec Eprinex? SO CONFUSED!

If you are going to err then you can better err on the side of giving too much (within reason) as too little...the Eprinex has a wide safety margin (many wormers dont so this is only for ivermectin/Eprinex !)
Giving too little not only would be useless but encourage resistance.

Great information, especially concerning the idea of resistance related to a too-low dose.

Now, we are also treating our flock for ILT (sigh) so I am concerned about worming them at the same time. Do I worm now to relieve the worm-related stress or will the treatment be even more stressful for them?

(I should mention that all of these problems began when my husband brought home some "surprise" hens that I wasn't expecting. He immediately added them to our flock. I removed them when I arrived home that evening and isolated them, but the damage was done. Another sad testament to the importance of careful bio-security in your backyard flock.)

Hello, I'm afraid we are about to wage war on some nasty little bugs.

I was reading about the Eprinex/Ivermectin and am hoping to get some of it as soon as possible from the farm store, but I've also heard that it doesn't have a very good shelf life after it's opened...Is this true? Can I only make a small amount at a time? What is the best amount to buy/how much solution does that amount make for use on the birds? I have also bought some Sevin for dustings and some Adam's Flea & Tick shampoo. Can I use the shampoo, dry the birds, dust them, then put Ivermectin on them too, all at once? I really want to win this battle. Those bugs are threatening my feathered children!

I also saw some drops for dogs at the supermarket, but they contained other ingredients such as imidacloprid, fipronil & S-methoprene; but not any permethrin or pyrethrin. The products claim they kill lice, as well as fleas and ticks. Will these work just as well if I am unable to get any Eprinex/Ivermectin? Are those other ingredients safe for use on the birds? Also, we have ducks and guineas with our chickens...Can they get/pass the same pests from/between one another? We have also considered using sharp silica sand in small quantities for dustings. Will this kill/prevent mites and lice as well?

For lice prevention - I use food grade DE (diatomateous -sp? earth) mixed in the feed and mixed in their bedding and have not had a problem with lice yet. I also use a product called Poultry Protector, we spray it under their wings where there is a bit of skin showing once a month.

Re the dosage on Eprinex - I don't treat very young birds - they generally get their first worming at approximately 6 months of age. However, I do weigh my birds before dosing because there can be so much variation. The recommended dosage is 1 ml per 22 lbs. It requires a little simple math to figure out the correct dosage, but I am always cautious with ANY drug I use on the birds. This comes out to 1/2 cc for an 11 lb. bird and 1/4 cc. for a 5.5 lb. bird. I use a very small syringe (1 cc. size) because I have bantams. Even 1/4 cc. would be too much for a full grown silkie who weighs around 2 lbs.

We just recently got some Ivomec Eprinex from the store & have the correct size syringes for putting on the drops, but I have a few more questions. (Eprinex doesn't have to be diluted, does it?) We would like to dose our hens on the backs of their necks, but thought about our roosters too, because they often hang on to the hens' necks for mating (We don't currently incubate any of their eggs, but we're hoping they may eventually decide to fully sit on there own.) Is there an ideal location to apply the Eprinex on their necks so that it won't pose any risk to the boys? Will we have to keep them separate after application & for how long? (They sometimes get nervous when separated from each other.) Will we be able to eat their eggs after applying the Eprinex? Also, we considered treating our Guineas as well, because our Guineas share the same large coop with our chickens and four Pekin ducks.) Is Eprinex safe for Guineas? Can the ducks get the same pests?

I use the same as Barnyard -
1/2cc for standards
1/4cc for bantams

I did all my birds that were 5 months and older. I did not do the younger ones. This my choice. I worm once a year in the fall. Some people worm twice a year.

What is the CC? And you put it in their mouth or skin & what locations?

Does anyone know if this will also help scaly leg mites? Ive noticed my ladies have some subtle but definitely lifted scales. Ive washed and brushed, dried and oiled and vaseline, too. But, I dont see improvement, the scales just seems to continue to lift and chip. I feel so bad for them. Ive gotten into their coop twice in the past couple weeks and scrubbed, vacuumed, swept, and removed everything. cleaned it all, sprayed alcohol everywhere, and dusting the heck out of both levels of their coop. Its 105°f and im not doing it all again until it cools. Im not trying to pass out in the coop. haha. But seriously, I dont know what else to do. I also just had to remove brambles from their feet so am replacing and sanding all of the roosts.
