There are quite a few contagious respiratory diseases that have similar symptoms so it would be hard to know which one it is, unless you detect a rotten smell, then it could be Infectious Coryza.
I agree, unless you see an avian vet, you may not find one that knows a lot about chickens. This is why I suggest contacting your state diagnostic lab - most do know about poultry, because they perform necropsy, testing, etc. It depends on your state, but some of them also will accept a mucous sample to test without you having to send a bird in.
