Coryza outbreak

Sorry for you losses. You're doing the right thing by culling your infected birds. Any new birds you acquire should be quarantined for at least 30 days. That gives you time to fully inspect them and time for most diseases to rear their ugly heads. Keep in mind that you'll have to thoroughly disinfect everything your sick birds were in contact with; feeders, waterers, coop, roosts etc...you have your work cut out for you. You are correct, surviving birds are carriers...best to cull them as well. Keep in mind that the clothes you wear, shoes and hands can easily transmit diseases, spreading it around also. I wish you the best. Here's a link to respiratory diseases in poultry. Scroll down to "Infectious Coryza" and read about it, other diseases as well if you wish:

Thanks dawg53! The cleanup has begun. Wife washed all the feeders and waterers today. We are washing the coop and run down tomorrow. I have a question for you. I don't have to put anything in this coop/run anytime soon. Have you got any idea how long this disease would stay in the soil? I ordered new chicks already and will be housing them far away from where this all took place. Just wondering when the "radioactive" levels would be safe again.

My wife and I cleaned the run and coop yesterday. We washed the coop out with a water hose then we used bleach and then ammonia (DO NOT MIX THE TWO!!!) in a garden sprayer and washed it again. I took the sprayer full of ammonia and sprayed everything else in the run down. We wont have any more birds in this coop/run for about 3 months. It was a job but we got it all done.
