Cost of antibiotics?!

Hello, this morning I posted a thread about my pullet that had more than half of her comb come off and now I need to talk antibiotics. I called a vet that will see her, but its 160.00 just to walk in door. She couldnt offer me any other prices for any other treatments they may do and i need to know. So, has anyone purchased antibiotics for chickens before??? Is there an avenue I can take to get them without going to the vet? Thank you.

Topical neosporin or something similar should be fine, shouldn't be a need for systemic drugs. Make sure flies don't go after this site!

Folly’s place, thank you for your time. I currently have her in the kitchen. More than half her comb is unattached. Not sure how to move forward. I washed with the vetericyn and antibiotic cream. Now what?! Thank you.

Actually trimming it off isn't a bad idea, especially if it's annoying her, loosing it's blood supply, or otherwise looking like it's a liability for her.
Sadly, game type cockerels have their combs cut off for show, and while it's not so nice only for cosmetics, the birds do fine. Check on any of the threads about Old English Games, or look up the topic directly.

Thanks Mary, I will certainly look it up. Just cant do it now b/c i’m too overwhelmed from this day. This is her now.

I have no experience dubbing a comb. But it occasionally is done on certain breeds, and especially if there is a partially torn off comb. A very sharp pair of scissors, knife, or a razor are used. I agree. I didn’t trim a comb injury very similar to this one and it shriveled up and fell off anyways, and was very annoying to her until it did fall off. I didn’t know trimming was safe at that time.

So yeah, it’ll undoubtedly fall off regardless. It doesn’t grow back but birds don’t care. Comb injuries bleed A LOT though so don’t be alarmed. Corn starch is very effective at stemming blood flow. Just keeping it clean should be sufficient. No antibiotic meds necessary.
