I think I am going to side with Millicent right now. My coop is all but falling over. I am supposed to get a new coop and yard built well actually lat summer. I spent hours out side with post hole diggers trying to dig down through shale and Then I concreted posts down into the ground . However that is as far as it has gotten. My Hubby hasnt let me do anymore because he has this idea of biulding a big shop with part dedicated to my birds and the part to Fire wood or storage or some other thought he might have. But I have been waiting for him to get out and start it. And my am begining to think that it may be another summerf is going to go by before he is ready to start it. in the mean time the old "Temporary" coop is getting closer and closer to falling over. And since my Fox problem, I have had to resort to go out every night and putting my birds into our rabbit cages to keep them safe. So anyway Millicent I can tottally relate to what you are saying.

I spent about 50$ for a small coop and run , 8 x 3 1/2
the bases were salvage from a construction job, had I been faster I could have gotten all the 2x4 too.
I used 2x2 framing, thin plywood sheets, mesh, left over screws I had, new hinges and latch.
I owned the dog exercise pens that make up the out side run portions.
I will have four hens, and have few predators in our area, so I do not have to do over kill building.
Stain was left over from the fence.
Treasure those DH with building skills!!
not a single post on how cute my coop is!!
cheers

new hens arriving thursday, the last batch was all rooos!

Well mine isnt finished yet but the coop, run and tractor should end up at around $250-$300 ish or less.
I am building a similar one to the playhouse but I have no drawn up plans for it and im making alot of modifications to the design for versatility.
We have houses being built down the road from us and I asked for scrap and they gave me Nothing so I bought all our materials at Home Depot and (Homedepot's twin) Lowe's.

I don't have alot into mine! Really!! Not!! I do alot of recycling but, am constantly expanding. All my friends and coworkers know that when they are doing clean ups that I will take almost anything. It is hard to keep the mess straight. I just try and use it as I get it. My chicken tractor cost me about $50. I didn't have to buy the chicken wire for it, someone gave me a roll. My brooder cost about $30. 2 coops were about $70. I buy the big buckets of screws so I always have screws on hand. That is not factored in to the price. I think they run about $40. I try and use pallets from the job to build divider walls, free. I just bought a 20x30 fishing net used off of Ebay for $50 shipped. It hasn't gotten here yet. Poles and cement for the runabout $50. I'm sur there is more that I am trying to hide. My plans are to have at least 10' x 30' coop, one side of the pole barn. And a run that should be about 20' x 30'.

WAAAAAY to much, our hilton was over $1000 when completed last summer. its 8x8 with a 8x16 fenced run, metal roof, 4 inches of insulation, and power.

the week after we completed construction a friend offered us one they never use anymore.

to top if off my wife went out and spent another 300 last week so we can provide them an 8x8 covered area and an additional 8x16 run.

I figure they need to lay an egg every day for the next 2 years before they begin paying for themselves.

I feel better after reading all of these i bought mine at $330 but i have yet to sand it, prime it, paint it, and i still have to buy all the stuff to make the run, including the tools ( ihave one screwdriver to my name). Plus I have to buy the honeysuckle, or spinich to plant to make it nice and green

With just my 4 chickens, I used an old dog run and dog house, but now I've added 12 more chickens, so.....$1,100 for the shed kit, plywood, insulation, etc., etc., Well, way too much!!! But my DH is being a dear and not complaining about building the new coop and soon to be run. Aren't the chickens worth it???

jkm,
Believe it or not, I am using some of your ideas from your coop in converting my desk to a coop.

I was so sorry to hear you had all roo's, how very discouraging. I also live in the city, and would encounter the same prob, I would be so attached by 10 weeks, I dont know WHAT I would do tho.
Anyhow, I think your coop looks great and very cute.

My problem is I dont know how to make a pitched roof. The rest I think I can handle.

Anyhow, I went to Menards one night, ready to buy all the stuff, and my sis kept a handle on me and was in a bad mood and wouldnt let me buy anything. I guess the guy in the sky was looking out for me, cuz the next day I went to a garage sale with my hubby, and they had a bunch of 8 x 8 pieces of plywood, and 4 x 4's as well, they were just GIVING away. I paid the man $2, cuz I felt kinda guilty. You NEVER see wood at a garage sale here, so I was soooo lucky. I got 3 pieces of 4 x 4's and a bunch of small scrap. Anyhow, we didnt have the pickup, so didnt get it all, but I wished I had. He also had a bunch of 2 x 4's in the garbage that we took, so for the most part, that will work. I still need a couple more pieces of 1 x 3's I think, and had to buy hardware cloth.

The worst part was buying the staple gun, the staples, a new battery for my recip saw and new charger, those darn batteries are $$$$$.

And the hardware cloth, all I can find around here is 2 x 3, or 1/2 x 1/2 so I got the 1/2. I went everywhere, tsc, Lowes, Menards, Orshelns, Home Depot. No one had it, odd huh? TSC did have it in 2 foot height, but my run is 3 foot, sigh. That and that night I was there with sis, it was on sale for 16.99, but I didnt buy, and when I got back there, it was 28.99. Ouch.

So far I have spent $150, but mostly on stuff I might use in future, like I said...staple gun, battery...etc.
Probably just on coop itself...lets see...hinges, hardware cloth, handles, latches...Possibly wheels in future...water proofing, paint..will prolly be $100.
Did ok, hmm? Of course, we arent finished yet...
