Cotournix using the hide-out you gave them?

Mine use them all the time. I use small cardboard boxes with two entrance/exits cut into them. Their favourites are dollar store baskets, though. I think they feel sheltered while still being able to see out.

What height are the holes you've cut? Mine are jumbos and before I realized how large they would grow to be, I bought a 4" Y-shaped PVC sewage pipe, sealed off the two ends (leaving only one entrance and a "blind" corner) and zip-tied it to the back wall. I've never seen the birds go in it (identical setups in two different cages) so I'm wondering if it might be because the pipe is too small, or the floor is too slick, or something else I haven't considered.

The way I've got the "Y" lashed to the wall of the cage makes a confined corner between the PVC tube and the dust bath, and that tight spot does seem to be a popular place to hang out.

I'd thought about an upturned plastic box but I haven't yet found one that was 7-8 inches tall that wouldn't take up too much real estate on the floor of the cage.

The holes I cut into them are about 6" tall and about 5" wide? I don't measure, I just cut them to a size where the birds will easily fit through them.

Nabiki, are these the dollar store baskets you were referring to?

At first I thought you meant shopping baskets but that confused me because I didn't think they sold their shopping baskets. When I couldn't find anything at WW that was narrow enough and tall enough, I went to Dollar Store and found these. I haven't seen any birds taking refuge yet but they do walk through them often.

I used to have little baskets like that, but with a bottom on it. If you put some sawdust in there, they go crazy for it and absolutely love them.
