Hello! I have some new (to me) color varieties in my covey this year and I'm hoping to get some clarity from the quail experts (that's you guys) on what I have...I'm fairly confident I have Tibetan, rosetta, and tuxedo-ish versions of the two, but the difference between Tibetan and rosetta is tripping me up. I've tried googling the two but both search results have some shared pictures which only muddy the waters...here are a couple pictures of the different colors I have:

Hen #1: I believe this one is Tibetan...?

Hen #2: I believe this one is Rosetta tuxedo(ish)...she is more brown than #1 and has lacing/barring

Thanks all!

I would say both are Rosettas, as Tibetan are more dark and have less lacing.

Technical Tibetan are dark brown homozygotious and Rosettas dark brown heterozygotous with a lighter color mixed e.g. Golden (Italian), as dark brown is incomplete dominant.

The Tux is a Multi Factor additional to the normal color gene.
I read a little about it recently. Bought a book, very scientific 🤓

The Piebald Factor is located in 5 different genes, all recessive:
White breasted
White crescent
White bib
White primaries
White feathered down

The correct mix makes the perfect Tux... very complicated :old😉 ...
... haven't figured out by myself how to control it for breeding.

Edit: and there is a sixth gene, nothing to do with the Tuxedos, which is dotted White

Quick question! I have some sort of dark range (think cinnamon) boy. He's got a white bib- but also perfect white eyebrows over both eyes . Any idea what causes that?

It is a Rosetta, a Tibetan (Dark Brown) diluted by another factor, most times it is the Fawn factor of Italians and Manchurians.
A dilution of Dark Brown by Cinnamon would look like this:

For the pied white your quail has two factors homozygotious, White Bib and White Crescent, one causing the bib/beard, the other the white coloring on the head.

Thank you!

His mother was a golden (italian)!

I've been breeding and raising quail for a little bit, but it seems like knowledge of colouring is VERY scarce where I am at in Canada, and a lot of people call colours by different names than I am seeing on here.

I have a batch hatching in the incubator right now. My guess is my boy above made his rounds because I am seeing a lot of very dark brown babies with yellow over the eyebrows 🤣😅, along with many silver, a few whites, some type of tuxedos (almost look like dark silver colour but hard to tell in the incubator and wet), possibly a golden. It's been a lovely hatch!

And I have a male that looks an awful lot like the bird you just posted above. I'll try and get some pictures of birds later and see if members can give me accurate colour names 😊

Very proud of my birds but I want more knowledge than what people seem to be able to offer around here.
