I'm planning on getting some eggs or chicks here in a few weeks ( after CoopCrazy hatchs like 50 bagillion quail and chicken eggs LOL). I've read that the tibetans can be mean. I've had the wild color before but I'd like to get some different ones.. like Italians, tux, english, cinnamon, etc.... How are their personality's? With other quail? Towards people?

It depends on what you want "best" to mean...best tasting?

best behaved? biggest eggs?

my 0.02 is that any of them can be mean...in my personal and limited experience I've had tibetans, tibetan tux, goldens, english whites, browns and jumbo browns, and newly- cinnamons. You mention mean tibetans- I've had mean ones and nice ones. I'm not really sure that temperament would have anything to do with color, but more with bloodline.

At the wonderfully succinct advice of wifezilla- I culled my mean ones. The result- a less stressed, more sweet and calm flock that lay better and more consistently.

Now- as far as "best"- I personally like raising the browns, goldens, and cinnamons because I can begin to feather sex at a much younger age than with tibetans, english whites, and tuxes- but I'm not good at vent sexing, and so it is easier for me to look at how they feather in.

So that's my 0.02....I'm sure others will be able to chime in with more experience, more knowledge, and more technical advice! Best of luck with your new quail adventures!

I don't know 100% and have only read that goldens have a lethal gene when crossed to another golden causing 25% mortality. That might be something to consider altough I'm not sure how true that is. I'm sure someone with goldens will know though.

Coturnix are coturnix no matter what color. There does not seem to be a corelation of color to any specific behaviors or traits other than breeding for color.

JJ said it....Color makes no difference they all behave the same. I find I prefer jumbo sized birds for butchering and no matter the color they all are easy to process. Jumbos also lay a TON of eggs and good sized eggs!

Thanks all.. Thats what I needed to know.. Just like roosters some are mean some are not. I'll have to get quiet a few of different ones and prepare myself for culling if mean ones are present... Never culled a home raised birds before, but give me a shotgun and put me on in a field of wild game and thats no problem
