Don't I know it! I've been having awful nightmares that none of them would hatch and I'd be left trying to explain that to my three kids.

I still can't believe we actually hatched as many as we have. We're up to 31 and I see one more that might be pipping. How long do you leave in your unhatched eggs? 12 hours after the "official" hatching day? 24 hours? I've only got 3 hatchlings left in the incubator, so after they fluff up and I remove them, how long do I wait to make sure nobody else is going to hatch? Sorry for all the dumb questions, this is my first time trying to hatch anything at all.

Honestly it's up to you, i'd say atleast 12 hours after the last pip. However as Shelley can tell you eggs can go on hatching for DAYS lol! Just be greatful you only have what 8 left? LOL!

Well, we lost one last night.

The second to last one to hatch had one of his legs splaying and just couldn't seem to get up on his feet or move around very well. He would kind of drag himself around in the incubator. When it was time to move the last batch into the brooder we turned him over to tie his legs closer together with a pipe cleaner and noticed that his stomach was still swollen and a little "mushy", which was why he couldn't put is legs together enough to walk. We quickly put him back in the incubator, put he died a few minutes later.

I don't think he would have made it anyway, as he was moving less and less by the time we pulled him out and it had already been about 14 hours since he hatched. We had another one that hatched with a small amount of yolk that hadn't been absorbed yet, but he made it just fine. I wonder what causes that? I think our hatch is done now, no other eggs have pipped or hatched since 10 am Monday. Out of 39 viable eggs left at day 14, 31 is a wonderful hatch, even if we lost one. I'm just glad the kiddos were in bed by the time the sad little guy died. The kids didn't even notice the next morning that we were short one in the brooder (especially since it's impossible to count 30 scampering quail babies).

awh im sorry about the one but yes I am so happy for your great hatch!

I am also glad the kiddos didnt even take notice! *phew*! LOL!

I've never had a coturnix hatch out with yolk but I have had a chicken chick hatch out with yolk and if im not mistaken in my case the poor thing died but it had an extensive amount still out. I was bummed but what can ya do. I think that those chicks either were stimulated to hatch too early by the other chicks peeping or they just grew faster and were cramped before they fully absorbed the yolk....those are my theories tho no expert oppin here
