Coturnix in lockdown, when should I become concerned?

Yeah. im starting to wonder how my cats going to react with the small quail. they do good with chickens lets hope the same for quail D:

hmmmm hopefully the won't be interested in the quail. My cat couldn't care less about them in the brooder. I think if I let them run around on the floor in front of her I may have to keep an eye out so she didn't bat at one and hurt it out of curiosity.

Yesterday I had a little gray kitty waltz right in and make herself at home. I didn't have the heart to throw her back out in the snow. Well, she's a little too interested in my quail for my comfort. I keep the door closed at all times now so she can't get near them. I threatened to put her in a stock pot if she went near them again.

Yeah thats what im hoping aww she just wants a nibble just to see how it tasts. i need to set an alarm to turn the eggs... i forgot to turn them till like 12 today. opps

lol as long as they get turned an odd amount of times throughout the day you're good to go. An alarm isn't a bad idea though. My first hatch I had alarms. I was so excited that I never once needed them but better safe than sorry.

So I always give grit. Even to babies that only get starter. Well they emptied the little bottle cap finally. Which was shocking because they dump their food within minutes of getting it lol. Anyway, I took a big lid and put grit in it and set it in with them. Best quail toy EVER! I thought they were too young to get into dust bathing but they all dove in and started flopping and making a huge mess and had a blast. It was adorable

Their entire brooder floor is covered in food and grit now though lol

I heard putting their food on a stand helps with waist. just make sure they can still get their beak in the food. and try putting their dust bath stuff in a bowl big enough they cant push it all out, and small enough they can get in and out. How are their feathers coming out?

Oh I definitely plan to do something about their messy tendancies lol but they're so tiny right now still that they wouldn't be able to reach much else. So I let them make a mess and just clean it up regularly. I suspect they think it's a game I've made up for them. They get SOOOO excited when they see their dish refilled but they don't eat it so much as flick it everywhere and run around pecking at it and peeping. After they've made a big ol' mess they calm down and eat a bit. I've seen some really neat pvc ideas for waterers and feeders.

Their feathers have lots of spots. They don't look so much golden as kind of a buttery khaki so far. But only their wings have really feathered out much yet. So I'm sure that will change a bit. I'm watching their chests like a hawk waiting to see whose a hen and whose a roo lol I'm not sure I'm going to be able to cull these ones if I have too many roos. I'll probably just keep the extras until I find a home for them. Shouldn't be too hard around here. I see lots of ads on craigslist in the towns nearby looking for quail.

How your eggs? Have you candled again yet?

yeah im sure someone will take the rood if you have to many. I have not candled again yet. was thinking about doing it tonight but relised i dont know what to look for. when i candle eggs i only look for veins then normally leave them alone untill they hatch.
