Coturnix in lockdown, when should I become concerned?

Yeah our chickens are getting very old. thoes are the first 2 deformed eggs we got.

I ordered 12 and got 15 (thought i ordered 22 or 24 LOL) so im hoping to get atleast 4. I plan to set up some trios and maybe later get a big flock going in like a 9x9 cage but will mainly keep trios ad quads, and maybe get a few groups for morphs and secletive breeding. im interested to see how fast the quails will expand. hope you get lucky and get 1 male and 3 females

I wanted to bid on that auction but my incubator was full (dang dang dang). I'm hoping when I have enough room that the seller will still have auctions for them going.

that sucks :c how big is your incubator? mine can hold 41 chicken eggs or 120 quail and it was 48 dollars gonna get a few more

Sounds like we may have the same or at least a similar bator. I have 2 Little Giant Still Air incubators. One with the auto turner because I use it to incubate and, in theory, the 2nd incubator is for lockdown/hatching. I paid about the same for each one. My winter project this year is to build myself a nice cabinet incubator with all the bells and whistles and use my LG's for lockdown. I'm going to aim for my cabinet-bator to have a 350-360 egg capacity. That'd be about 1000 quail eggs give or take lol and I'm sure I will have to fill it to capacity at least once just to uhhh test it. yeah... test it...

Yeah someone got a smoking deal on those eggs. If I had seen them before I got all my other eggs I would've gone that route instead. I'd love to see more pictures of all their birds to see all the different colors. I bet they have some really cool looking ones. I did find an ad on craigslist for a variety of quail eggs today. There looks to be about 5 or 6 different breeds from what I can tell looking at the picture of the eggs. At 20 eggs for $4 I'm really tempted to give it a shot.

This Is the incubator i have. Its pretty nice so far for chicken, and seems to be keeping a consistant temp only going between 99.4 at the lowest and 100.6 at the highest so i hope it does the quail good.

This is the cabinet incubator im considering on getting for like 700 you can fit 1300 quail eggs. not to bad of a price considering ive spend more on my mountain and snow boards... opps

lol so that might be my goal once i build the 9x9 pen and geet a good auto water and food system going.

go for the $4 for 20 eggs lol cheap and wont hurt a wallet to much i might just go with This or This in a few hours lol. only $10 for 45+ eggs and i know for a fact im going to get more quail soon

Those are pretty good deals. I love the white A&M's. I'd like to have just a few for aesthetics. I always worry that all white critters are like white cars... can't keep em white

I have a few white meat rabbit breeders and when they start getting a little off white, into the bath they go!

Snow boarding looks like a lot of fun but I'm not graceful enough to try it. I stick to the water if boards are involved. Softer landing... usually. Are you building your own auto water/feeding systems? If so I'm curious what you've got in mind. I'm working on a pvc system but I'm not using any kind of plans. Just winging it. I like to tinker. Feeders are pretty brainless but the watering system should be fun.

I've actually eyed that same cabinet bator

and the price tag on it was what gave me the idea to make my own. And well... there's the building of it that I'm looking forward to. I saw one on craigslist a couple months ago for a little over $200, can't remember how much exactly, and now I'm kicking myself for not jumping on it. I hadn't been bitten by the 'bator bug' at that point though so it seemed excessive.

I considered getting a hovabator because a lot of users on here talk about them but ran across the LG's at my local feed store. I'm not sure what the difference, besides brand, is between them. I've seen a lot of people having trouble with the temps or humidity in their still air LG's but I haven't had an issue yet. I wanted to upgrade to the Brinsea ocatagon with the humidity pump because I've heard such great things about them. Until I saw the price tag. They just don't have a high enough capacity for that kind of money. Just my opinion though.

Oh, curious, how many times a day are you rotating your quail? And are you letting them incubate without turning for the first 3 days since they were shipped?

I let them sit for 24 houes before incubating. never done or heard of letting them set while incubating though? and im turning them 3 times a day.

That cabinet incubator is a peice of eye candy to me im really considering getting one. i think hatching stuff is kinda addiciting c:

Have not really got the plans set out for the auto stuff kinda just going to play with it for the next few days see what i make. im going to try to make a good plan for a pvc pipe cage with a slanted floor under the wire so the eggs just rool to the front of the cage and then have one side for water and the other for food

The idea behind letting them sit for the first 3 days of incubation is to give the air cells the chance to possibly reattach after shipping because so many become floaters from the rough treatment. I've been doing it and am always curious if other people do and if they notice if it ups their success rate or not. I've always heard that they should be turned an odd amount of times throughout the day but the last couple days I've been reading about people doing it only twice a day. It was a new concept to me.

Hatching is definitely addicting. Every time space opens up in my incubator, it gets filled up again. If you go for the big boy you'll have to keep everyone updated on it. I'm sure all the little people (like me) with our still air foam bators wouldn't mind living vicariously

Ive always had good hatch rates with shipped chicken eggs without not turning the first 3 days. but i know what your talking about the detached air cells and mosy people say 24 hours is enough time to sit and allow them to reattach so i just do that I dont know if im going to now. just spent a heap of money on some new toys soo dont want the fam to be to ****** but if i do will keep you guys posted

That's a bit reassuring because I set a dozen eggs this morning and put them directly into the auto turner after the 24 hour rest period. It's the first time I've started turning so soon and I'm a little nervous.

Well if the last 2 quail eggs don't hatch by morning I will float test them to see what's up. I can't believe how quiet quail chicks are compared to chicken chicks. They make noise constantly but their voices are so tiny that I don't notice unless I purposely listen for them. Even when I'm right next to the brooder.

Ugh i forgot to turn them at noon today i dont think it should effect them. i did turn them twice. im taking it being nervous when you have quail is going to be a norm. Im glad they are quiet lol. maybe my dog wont know they are here and he wont try to say hi
