I have 50 chicks they are 12 days old some look like they are 2 days old and some are growing big the big ones are getting feathers the little ones are fuzzy they all eat the same and drink the same now the little ones are starting to die I go and check them and 1 or 2 will be dead I moved all the little ones to there own pen so the big ones dont crush them

Mine started 'rusting' about that age too LOL It seemed like I noticed a little of it one day and the next there was no denying it. I'm looking forward to pics :D I can't wait til my first big (to me) batch goes into lockdown! I talked to the guy with all the different coturnix colors and am going to order a mix of all the colors after these hatch. That should be a lot of fun to see what I end up with... and then what I end up with after the colors intermingle

I have to say, quail are more fun when it comes to incubating. Less waiting around and again when you're just dying to know whose a roo and whose a hen! When do the roos get their voice? Mine still hasn't shown any inclination to crow. He's kind of a mamas boy though lol He has a thing about hanging out on my shoulder and cuddling in my hair. I keep waiting for him to outgrow it but so far he's showing no signs of wanting to( and I can't say I mind too much). I answered the door for the mail lady yesterday and if she didn't think I was a little tapped in the head already from all the hatching eggs she brings to my door, she sure thinks so now! The minute she saw a little quail head poking out of my hair she acted like I'd opened the door naked or something. Stuttering and backing up as fast as she could go

Has anyone heard of stunt an runt sydrome and how quails get it

No I'm sorry I haven't. I did have a silkie chick that stayed fuzzy instead of feathering for a long time. I was starting to think he/she would stay that way. I've never heard of it happening to quail. I'm curious to know if anyone else has any information.

Yes the males will start to show rust at 2-21/2 weeks. Give them another couple of days to be sure. Most of the time you will end up with more males than females.

How are these chicks being housed? What surface are they on? Protein level in their feed?

One thing about coturnix chicks is you must keep them very clean and away from their droppings. If you let droppings accumulate they will pick at them and get enteritis.

They get lethargic, don't eat much, fail to thrive and eventually can die. It's easier to keep them clean on rubbery shelf liner with paper towels under them when they are tiny, you can change it out a couple of times a day as they soil it. Move to wire with shavings or paper under it as they get bigger. You can keep them on just shavings but it will be a struggle to keep their living quarters hygienic and you will go through copious amounts of shavings. Splitting them into much smaller groups is a good way to help keep them cleaner too.

Make sure as they grow to put their water and feed source up so they don't foul them. After a couple of days I put the food and water dispensers up on a paver, then a brick, then a couple of bricks so they stay cleaner and the chicks can't step or poop in them.
