coturnix late hatch, when should I float test them?

I'm sorry to hear about the chick not surviving...

But, from research I've done previously, and from brief memory now, the more common reasons could be;

- Shrink wrapping ; When an egg dries out, I think from low humidity.

- Drowning ; When humidity levels are too high. The chick gets too wet and drowns. I think 85% might have been a little too high, in my opinion. I just needed around 65% to get a decent hatch rate.

- Low viability/Low fertility rate

- Weakness ; Some chicks can die whilst still pipping or even before that.

- Born wrong ; I don't know if there are any proper terms for this, but it could of been born with a birth defect and wasn't strong enough.

- Bad genetics ; Probably passed down from the parents, it could be from in-breeding continuously.

Hello everyone,

After the unsuccessful hatch described in this thread, we're giving it another try with 4 silkies and 3 coturnix eggs at the moment. They're going into lockdown today, and my question is how do we keep the humidity high if we're not supposed to open the incubator during lockdown? Should we just fill in borth reservoirs with water and then wait until they hatch? Or should we open it slightly anyway to put in more water whenever humidity goes under 60%?
On the one hand - no opening the incubator during lockdown, on the other - keep the humidity high. I'm confused.

Thank you for any advice! :)

I insert a thin tube into mine that reachs the floor and add water through that.
