That's probably exactly what she's thinking! I'm hoping putting her in our aviary with the others in a more natural, planted environment will stop this. We just need to get it all set up. If she won't stop she'll have to go back to the cage they are currently in and live with Periwinkle who she came home with.

Thanks Feather Hearts, Q has been a very sweet boy.

How old are they? I have that problem randomly when the girls are just coming of age. 1 or 2 hens per batch will start picking on everyone because they aren't ready for the roos attention. I separate them for about a week and it sorts itself out.

Q, Periwinkle and Tinkerbell are two years old now. Tinkerbell didn't pluck other golds until we hatched some of their babies and introduced the two resulting girls - Cookie and Noelle. They all live together because Cookie and Noelle do not like the Tibetan Tuxedo boy, Scooby, (Tinkerbell and Periwinkle don't like him either) that Luna is happily in with (not ideal I know but the girls will be going into the aviary soon - not sure if a boy will be joining them). And Luna does not like Q at all! It's like a soap opera!

I have just hatched one of Luna and Scooby's eggs under a bantam hen. I know lots of people do not think chickens should be anywhere near quail but I'm in New Zealand and we have less poultry and bird diseases which is why there are never any live imports of any type of bird. Only chicken eggs are brought in for the commercial poultry industry which are kept under strict quarantine conditions. I also frequent a petshop that specialises in birds of all kinds that have always had Silkie chickens on the premises, and often the chicks are brought up in the aviaries. They've been in the business 34 years so I don't think they'd still have chickens if they'd ever had a problem. Not with the expensive parrots they often have! I think wild birds have a lot more to answer for - I had four young chickens get a respiratory infection that could've only come from wild birds. One ended up dying. My runs now all have solid roofs so no wild birds can poop into the cages!

I'm not sure what colour our baby is going to be - it looks darker than the pharaoh chick pictures I can find online but still has the 'wild' stripes. It also has yellow wing tips and a yellow spot either side of its beak. It's so darn cute and our hen has been talking so quietly to it. She's hatched chicken chicks before but has accepted this tiny baby no problem. They are inside at the moment (we have a lot of birds inside - I've turned into the crazy bird lady)! Can't wait to get them out in the aviary but I don't want to put anything out until Guy Fawkes night has been and gone.

Not sure if any more chicks will hatch - our quail are no 'spring chickens' and it's only the start of spring here so fertility isn't great anyway.

Here's the cute little critter:

Yes - we have an Anna to go with our Elsa. Not sure if you know the kids programme Peppa Pig, but we have another big chicken called Peppa, and one called Happy Mrs Chicken. My son loves colours at the moment and we raised some Orpington chicks. He named a blue one Greeny and was a bit sad when it turned out to be a boy and had to go back to the breeder (we are in town). We also have a white and dark brown finch called Orange!
