Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Wow. My 7 are between 10 and 10.5 weeks old and I've never had a single egg from them. I'm positive at least 2 are female, and 3 I'm not sure of. Lazy birdies..

they lay with more than 14 hrs of light so if its less than that they wont lay

Ah! They're in an indoor hutch and I had been leaving a light on all night but started turning it off the last couple of weeks. Didn't even think about the light contributing. Thanks.

The light on works with horses too... guess thats why spring is full of baby animals. They use lights in commercial laying operations too.

Wahoo mini incubator, thats what I hatch in, , so much fun! Here is the best place. I do have an english book called practical quail keeping, by sarah and martin barrett , thats a good read.

I guess I was just impatient. My now-nearly-12 week olds started laying yesterday. Have one bantam chick egg due to hatch next week, so I'm going to save up what I get from them 'till then and pop them in the bator to test fertility.

I'm getting worried... we have 120 coturnix quail eggs in the bator and on day 17 there isn't a single pip from any of them....

I'm hoping they didn't freeze in the mail, it took them an extra day to get here and it was REALLY cold...

if there is no odor, wait it out a few more days. if they were chilled may take a day or so longer to hatch.
Its surprising how tough an egg can be if the air sacs aren't damaged..
I lost power last month and the eggs dropped in the low 80s. I was sure I lost the batch, but they just hatched late.
had 36 out of 48 hatch!
