Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

The aggression just started and I only have 6 quail. And what do u mean by stomach it?

Just that some people have a hard time with things like that. I've never trimmed a beak myself, but have heard it can help. My numbers are high enough that I can just cull troublemakers. I would search beak trimming and see if that is something you'd bed comfortable with.

Ok I clipped her beak and the first thing she did was eat

Has the aggression stopped?

I got my first covey today, 6 females, 2 males. 5 female brown coturnix and one male and a pair of TX A&M. I hadn't expected much from them in the way of laying, because I read traveling could upset them, and it was a 90 minute drive home. I figured that would upset their laying. Within 5 hours 6 females had given me 5 eggs. I can't believe it!

The one in front is the male A&M. I do plan to seperate them, but the other pen needs some repairs fist. I was concerned about the height but these guys dont seem to be all that flighty, if need arises, I have plastic hardware cloth I can put in over their heads.

My first egg! Not a bad size, if I do say so myself!

Congrats on the covey! Wow, very nice size egg! That's promising. Feed the highest protein you can, and they will produce nice big chicks & eggs for you.

I am feeding a mix of 22% (turkey & game bird grower) and 28% (non-medicated turkey and game bird starter) and when i noticed they were not eating the pellets I made a mash. They love it. The mix should be about 24-25%. I saved half the starter for when the chicks start hatching.

Only about 1/2 the eggs so far are 14 g, but these are not jumbos so guess thats pretty respectable.

I bought 50 Jombo coturnix hatching eggs from a seller on eBay (the guy from west Covina CA) 24 out 50 hatched, 10 died so now i have 12 and they are 9 weeks old and still not laying, such a waste of money I wouldn't buy from him again.

You got a 50% hatch rate from shipped eggs!? Be Happy that is a great hatch! As to loosing the others...well there is a learning curve if you are new to quail and even if not I always still loose a few each hatch that just fail to thrive. So with shipped eggs you can expect to loose some just because they were shipped and maybe just didn't develop quite properly.
