Coturnix-Which type flys the best?

Anyone know the answer? The regular browns and jumbo browns certainly don't fly well. I want them for dog training. If i use something other than a coturnix then the egg laying won't be year round and i plan on hatching and brooding my own (have the equipment already). There are many types of coturnix but I'm not familiar with all of them.

Find some that are not jumbos. Anything that matures to a smaller size will fly better than the bigger meat birds. That might mean finding the coturnix that a bred for color since those tend to be smaller. Shoot for 6-9 ounce birds at maturity. Also feed them one of the lower protein feeds designed for bobs being raised for flight, as in hunting. If you can raise your coturnix in a flight cage so they can exercise those wings you will have birds that will fly better. Also, if you want them flighty try to handle them as little as possible, especially as chicks. If you can feed, water and clean up after them without them seeing you or the dogs that would be ideal since you want them to fly away from you as a source of "danger".
