Hi All, Please help diagnose a cough that one of our 9-year-old French Copper Marans has developed in the last couple of days. There does not seem to be any nasal discharge. We are in central California, temperatures have been in the 60s-80s and dry the last few weeks.

She now has her mouth open much more often and the coughing/wheezing happens most often when she eats. Our other hen is fine. I just changed the bedding as well. They have been healthy for all the 7 years we've had them, and she has just resumed a month ago laying an egg every few days, until this past weekend when the cough became apparent. We only gave them medication once, about 6 years ago when we could see white worms in their feces. Nothing else since.

We kept them inside their run area since last fall when the threat of Avian flu hit the west. We started letting them out into the backyard again about a month ago.

I'm attaching a link to video of the cough:

Thanks so much for any advice you can provide.

Welcome To BYC

If this happens mainly when she eats, it's not Gapeworm and unlikely Mycoplasma.
Check to make sure her crop is emptying overnight. If it's not, then address that symptom.

Thank you so much for the advice. I read the article you attached and will investigate the crop issue. Our hen does cough and wheeze during the day when not eating, as well. But we'll check on the various crop-related ailments that out could be.

Update, (Saturday, April 29): Her crop was full and felt mushy compared to our other hen. I massaged it and gave her some yogurt and today the cough and wheezing are gone. So far it seems to be a temporary issue but we'll monitor her to see if her crop feels different.

Thanks, Wyorp Rock, for your advice!
