So, I have a Rooster named Fraulein, yes Fraulein because when we got her, ah Him, we thought he was a hen. Anyway, He was also born with a splayed leg which was not correctable by the time I got him. He is half the size of the other roosters so he lives happily with the goats in the goat barn and seems to be happy in there. Fraulein will get the occasional visit from some of our other hens during the day when the dutch door is open and they get along for the most part and they know that to goat barn is his territory.
A few days ago I noticed Fraulein sneezing a little and I didn't give it much thought because when giving the goats their Hay, Frauline sometimes gets under my feet and possible breaths in some of the dust. Tonight when I got home from work I noticed that Fraulein seemed to be gasping for air and wheezing like he has a chest cold. I decided that tomorrow I'm going to see the vet to get some antibiotics for him. Feeling really bad and a little helpless I was afraid that he was not drinking his water, I could see it was still full from this morning and I was afraid that if he does have a virus that he could be getting dehydrated. I've had chickens for many years and have delt with everything from emergency surgery to bumble foot so I consider myself somewhat experienced when it comes to the life and health of my flock. It was the first time that I've seen this in one of my chickens so I was a bit alarmed to hear Fraulein seemingly gasping for air.
I had to do something to help poor Fraulein so I got some poultry electrolytes, a baby dropper loaded with Buckley's cough and cold syrup, some Q-tips and a dab of Vic's Vapo Rub. I first gave Him a drink of the electrolytes but he had a hard time to drink it. I then gave only a few tiny drops of the cough medicine which made him sneeze a few times. I unloaded the rest outside on the ground then rinsed it out with clean water. I proceeded to fill the dropper with the electrolytes and he was happy to take it that way. I could tell he liked it because he wanted more. So, after that I took a very small amount of the Vic's Vapo rub (eucalyptus and vaseline) and dabbed it on his beak in front of his nostrils. I then dabbed a little more on his comb above is nostrils, just enough for the vapour to be inhaled. I didn't put much because I was afraid it would melt and go into his nostrils.
I know this sounds a little nuts, but I had to help poor Fraulein. About ten minutes after this un-orthadoxed treatment, He started hobbling around and seemed to look a bit better. More responsive to me where he was a bit lethargic when I started. He started pecking at his food and moving around again as he usually does. I was happy to see him feeling a little better but I can still hear the rattle in his chest. A quick remedy, tomorrow, Antibiotics.
PS I didn't touch or go into my other Chicken Coop to prevent spreading a potential Virus.
Two drops of cough syrup
Poultry electrolytes
A dropper
Q-tips
Vapo Rub
A little TLC and a lot of Hand Washing.
