Could he be Orpington? How did he get that color?

Hello!

Jack is one of my former patients. He came to me with about two dozen other sick chicks. He lost an eye, but is otherwise now a robust young rooster.

His farm of origin is a rescue ranch. There are so many breeds represented there! He was hatched at that ranch. No knowing who mom and pop are, I am told.

So, any idea? I have not seen red bars before! But then, I don't get out much. Thanks in advance! Will try to get better pics.

I think it could be an Orpington. I had one that look exactly like that. I'm not kidding they could be twins! Mine had a father that was a buff. He was a mix but mostly buff. I don't know mines mother though. She was just one of my laying hens.

I hope you discover what it is!

Personally, I don't think it looks too much like an Orpington. It could be one, as I've heard that some people are working towards colored patterns like this.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards a barred plymouth rock crossed with something that has that red color (as barring is a separate gene from color).
His body type looks like a plymouth, but can't ever be too sure.

Best of luck figuring out what he is! He definitely is a handsome boy.
