Could it be Cocci? 5 week old chicks puffed up seem sleepy Need Help!

Quote:
I have about the same news. No losses today. Everyone is on day 3 of Corid. Some of my younger chicks are doing better. I have one who is not as puffed up any more. I fed everyone mash yesterday and today with yogurt. I ran out of yogurt so I have to get some more tomorrow. After the treatment I am going to put the vinager in their water. Does it have to be apple cider? Because I think I only have white. I really feel like the yogurt mash is helping. Its encouraging those to eat who otherwise would not since its so yummy.

I am so glad yours are doing better as well. Maybe the worse is over for us?

I hope so...

I hope your chicks all get better.

I had a hard time with cocci last year. This time around when I noticed the first symptoms I isolated the sickly one and started her on sulmet and began washing and bleaching all the waterers and feeders every day. I did not medicate the healthy ones. I figured they would build up somwhat of an immunity to the virus as long as they were clean and healthy but I did give them vit-tal vitimins and carrot shreds in their grain for extra vitimin A.

I read on the MSU website about adding a tsp of bleach to the drinking water to help reduce the chance of bacteria/viral growth in the tanks between washings. Of course you don't do that while medicating. But it can help prevent the spread of the disease. I do it every day and I have only had one chick with it this year. out of around 400!

BTW you can also get di-methox which is another sulfanimide but powdered and easier to store. It works the same. You should keep one of these on hand even if you never need them.

I want to thank whoever first posted the yogurt mash suggestion, it's brilliant! It perked my girls right up:) I think I'll keep it up daily (along with meds) until they seem normal again. Then at least 1x a week, they love it! I'm also going to try some baby food veggies. My daughter out grew stage 2 recently, so the chickens can polish off the last of the jars. Glad to hear most of the chicks are on the mend:)

Hi .. I was reading your thread while searching for answers about my poor baby guineas... i just got back from TS to buy corid.. I am not 100% sure that they have cocci, but they have all the symptoms except the bloody poop.. i lost one more than a week ago, another over the weekend, and one yesterday. I have a 4th that looks puffy but is still eating.. i posted for help in the disease section, but so far no response... sorry to horn in on your post but do you know if I should treat all 9 or just the puffy skinny ones? I think mine got sick from eating hay or from damp food around the waterer.. is it safe to give corid to guineas if they dont actually have cocci? You seem to have this under control, and I am desparate to not loose all my babies one by one.. thank you so much for your time in advance, and I am so sorry for your losses.. thank you.

Here is a link to Peter Brown's article on coccidiosis. I should note that Peter srongly advocates against the use of sulmet and advises the use ofr sulfadimethoxine instead. I've not had problems with the sulmet, but certainly something to consider when treating. He advises a two pronged approach using both amprol (corid) and the sulfas because there are 9 species of cocci that infect chickens. For those of you who are treating sick chicks - you need to make sure they are getting enough of the medicated water - sometimes they do not improve quickly because they are not drinking enough to be sufficiently medicated. Hand feeding/watering is probably a good idea for a few days.

BTW - Peter's article seems to indicate that cocci are species specific, so does not sound like the same kind of protozoa infect guineas, but it would probably help to do some research on what types DO infect them and treat accordingly.

Ok - I did a quick check and it looks like guineas are affected by the same types of cocci as chickens, so go ahead and treat them all - liquid corid 2 tsp. per gallon of water. I do not withdraw medicated feed when treating for cocci. You also may want to consider treatment with a sulfa three weeks after the corid treatment. Be sure the sick keets are getting enough of the medicated water.

Your welcome. I swear it has saved my chicks too! I am actually running out to get some more. I ran out yesterday. I am going to feed them the mash every day for 5 days and then taper it down. I swear it has worked wonders for me and no more losses since. I am sure the Corid is helping to, but the Yogurt really gives them energry and lines their stomach with live cultures. I am so glad your girls perked right up. Yeah!!!!!

My next question is this. What if they go thru more then a gallon of water a day? When I refill their water, do I give them more meds or just plan water?
