Could she have been struck by lightning?

This is one of my laying Hens. Yesterday everything great. We had a horrible storm heavy rain and lightning go through last night. This morning this hen wont

open either eye, and her beak looks broke. Is it possible she got struck by lightning?

Here is a picture and she still laid an egg. I secluded her. She seems lethargic.

Maybe don’t title the thread ‘Hen?’ ‘Could she have been struck by lightning’ would be better and would attract more help. My guess is she was spooked by the thunder and injured herself by freaking out.

Wow, Idk. I'm sorry about your hen. I agree with oddoneout, maybe she got nervous and hurt herself. Has she pooped at all? Eating? Drinking? Can she walk?

Not eating, drank a little. She can walk but seems exhausted. I just secluded her and will try to hand feed and water. She has kept her eyes closed, but she is alert. When the dog walks by the garage where she is she is aware.

She may have suffered a beak and head injury from the fright or trying to get into the coop. Her beak injury hopefully will heal in time, but it might be painful. I would mix some different concoctions of wet chicken feed, and alternate with a little scrambled egg, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, or canned cat food to tempt her to eat. I use a small bowl and put it right up to the beak and tap it. The wet feed can get more water into her. Keeping her in a wire crate as you have her with the other chickens for company may make her feel more comfortable.

I would imagine if she had actually been struck that she would be a circle of feathers with not much in the middle about now. I've seen where lightning strikes have killed around 20-30 cows at once from 1 strike so that would be one tough hen to survive that.

Yeah, she wouldn't have survived a lightning strike. I think panic most likely is what caused the problems.

Poor girl. She may have suffered internal head trauma, which you won't know tge extent of for a while. Hopefully she makes a full recovery. It's good that she's alert.
