A few months ago I got a three month old Rhode Island Red rooster, we named him Reggie. He isn't human aggressive and is gentle with the girls. He is around the six month mark now, he hasn't crowed yet, however he does quite frequently mount any hens lower in the pecking order then him. Recently I found that my bantam cross something, Darling has gone broody. Darling is an excellent mother and has raised all of the babies I have let her hatch, no matter the species (Ducklings!).
I have seen my rooster mating with her but will she be fertile? She is currently nesting in the upturned spa pool, which is insulated so her eggs still stay warm even if she leaves the nest. I'm not sure if she is very intelligent or if it is just dumb luck.

Anyway, my main question is, could her eggs hatch? I have put a fair bit of money aside for the poultry show this weekend in hopes of snagging a silkie or two. However if there are no silkies I am probably going to get some fertile silkie eggs, however I didn't even think of her eggs actually hatching! I would never kill her babies before they even hatched! So could they hatch? I plan on attempting to lift the spa pool in about a week and candle. I know she won't budge, she is a broody of steel.

Okay, I sort of rambled the main question: Coulds her eggs hatch?
Ps, It is the last days of Autumn here (AKA Fall) so it's really not a good times for babies to hatch...

Wait!!!! You've got to wait and see. Chickens go bloody all the darn time. Doesn't mean they are dumb. Candle the eggs at 14 days. Then you will see.

He definitely could have already reached sexual maturity!

Thanks, I did a fair bit of digging into how old they have to be, and the general answer was six months, but some had roos as young as 13 weeks mating and producing viable eggs, There is just so much conflicting information out there that it is hard to find a straight answer. I am hoping they hatch though!

Good luck! I hope you get a hatch!
