My chicks started dying at 3 weeks old. They had bloody poop, which seemed to indicate cocci. I put them on a round of Corid for 5 days & feed them yogurt. After the five days, no more bloody poop & no more dead chicks.

They have been off the Corid for 5 days. I am feeding them medicated chick starter & yogurt. They do not, nor have they ever lived on dirt. The brood pen I have them in, has a layer of newspaper topped with paper towels, which are changed daily. No one is huddled off to themselves. They seem active & alert.

And now this:

There's A LOT of poop in there like that.

I have put them back on the Corid, because it's the only thing I know to do. The poop has blood so dark that it looks as if I fed them blackberries...I'm afraid they are bleeding to death.

I don't know what to do!!!! I don't want to loose any more chicks

Can you temporarily move them and disinfect the pen? That may help. Also I would do another round of Corid and go get some powdered milk and mix in with the feed, do about 1/3 milk to 2/3 feed. I had a case I had to use Corid 3 times to totally clear it. The powdered milk soothes their intestines

wait a bit and see if the corid does the trick (then you will know it is cocci)
Where did you get your silkies (did you hatch yourself?) If you got them from a hatchery were they vaccinated for anything and if so what? You might think on buying a new bag of feed (sometimes it has been stored improperly)

They have reinfected themselves.

Make sure you clean out their brooder or area with some oxine as it will kill the cocci oocytes and give another round of amprolium/corid. Make sure you give them 9.5 cc per gallon.

I have not heard of oxine. Where do you find it & will bleach work?

Thanks so much ya'll...I just understand how this happened if they have not been around dirt!!

They are splash marans...I bought them from a BYC'er in my town who had hatched them. He had them in a freezer-turned-brooder. The weather was very dry...not all moist & icky like it is now. They were on deep pine shavings as litter. It looked very clean. All of his other chicks looked really good.

These were doing super until about 2 weeks after I got them. Then they started dropping like flies.

I doubt they were vaccinated.

Well...the bloody poo just showed this morning, now one is dead & the brooder is full of blood. I've already cleaned it twice today.

I'm so disgusted with this.
