Could this be the PERFECT waterer? PICS!!!

I guess I should have shown one more picture:

BTW, I appreciate the suggestions. My last design was gravity fed, but if the water runs out of the source ........ it can't syphon out. When I tried using 2" pipe, the pipe was hard to clean.

So, how many toilets in your house have caused you trouble? The valves never fail to open. Loosing water outside would not last long, because my wife checks it while I'm at work. It was not designed to make my life easy, rather to insure my hens had water while I'm waiting for the corn to guard then from the western sun.

I think that is a great idea !!! Thanks for sharing.

Here is my waterer for the days I am gone.

Never mind the people. They are friends and neighbors that like to come over and feed the birds bread.

Oh, my dog is in the pic. This is about half the flock.

It's not the toilet valve I'm concerned about. It's the fifty feet or so of garden hose to mow around and the concern of it freezing up in the winter.

I intend to use a 55-gallon drum to supply my siphon system so it won't need refilling more than once a week.

As you might guess, we who live in this part of Texas seldom concern ourselves with freezes. It matters little how we get water to our flock, but rather that we are all being very responsible about making sure they always have what they need.

I've been planing on making a waterer like that. I'm a plumber and have the stuff avaliable, just haven't got around to building it. I'm gonna build mine to supply 3 different runs. Glad to hear this works.

Great design, thanks for sharing!!!

I use one of these Wal-Mart $12 dog waterers and a white potable water hose:

I've often been worried about springing a leak, so I have the water supply just barely turned on so if it does spring a leak I'm not at full open.

I had the system running strong for about 4 years with no troubles, then just a month ago I came out to water running. The white house sprung a big split right in the middle and soaked the ground really good. I'm not sure why it split, but guess that at one point I had kinked the hose between some boards at one point and it was just a weak point from then on. I cut the out the weak spot and used a hose mender to fix the split. Working fine again... maybe for another 3 years.

If I had the gumpsion I'd get a couple 50 gallon drums fed by filtered rain water and then gravity feed that to a system like this.
