Could This Heroic Rooster Have Been Saved? [Graphic Reading]

What a roo! My boy Nardole earned his place in my heart by charging a fox, but the end was much less impressive-- fox had him by the neck he would have died had my dog not intervened.
In this case. . . Man, it is so hard to know. A rooster that brave and bold, I probably would have given a damn good try BUT I have a wide variety of materials at hand, plenty of knowledge and experience doctoring animals, and a high tolerance for gross things, not to mention a great large animal vet that in a pinch I could use for things like stitches and antibiotics.

Not everyone has those things, and I don't judge when they make choices different than what I would. It's also possible that the roo was more severely injured than the message makes clear.

Right now you have about a 3 week window of time in which your hens are still fertilized by him. If you have some broodys or an incubator, collect as many eggs as you can from the best hens and try to make some sons of his. I have had hens that weren't touched by a rooster for a month and a half but some of the eggs were still fertile and hatched. With other roosters there fertilizing the hens, everyday decreases the chances of any egg still being fertilized by your good rooster. Personally, I would go buy a 'bator if I didn't already have one and keep those good genetics in my flock.
Sorry about your loss but good luck making a son!
