Hi
I would like to keep a couple of hens, but I'm a little nervous because I live in an upscale neighborhood and the zoning laws are not on my side. See my thread at
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=20701

I
found this shed kit, http://mantis.com/store/viewitem.asp?idProduct=956

and
when I saw it displayed with 3 sides closed off and one long side open, it gave me an idea. Everyone around here has a shed in their yard, mine would just be storing eggs! If I angled it just right, none of my neighbors would ever see what was in it. BUT...I want to put wheels and a handle on it so I can move it around the yard. so,.........could this work? What do y'all think?

I would have a very secure coop part up at the top, and the rest of the shed would be the run.

When I was thinking about coops, I thought I had to have something low so my neighbors wouldn't see it, but if it just looks like a shed, then I can treat myself and my future girls to a walk-in (for me) coop/run. I would also put some windows in for cross ventilation if you don't think it will "give it away".

Don't know about the wheels - that's a pretty big building (min 7x8) to be moving around... BUT I think it would work well. You'd just need to add a couple of windows for ventilation, and/or maybe a roof vent. Oh, and a small door for your chickens to use.

That is pretty big for just a couple of hens. Perhaps you should look into a chicken tractor or eglu. henspas are nice too.

Since you are in an "upscale" neighborhood, get some "upscale chickens!" Get something funky like polish with their top hats and nobody should make a fuss. Call them exotic birds that live outside! If they don't look like standard chickens, who's gunna know? Shoot, someone asked me if my buff silkie rooster was a monkey!!!

And yeah, that shed is kind of big for a few hens, are you sure you can't just make a place "for a pet dog" but instead dividide the dog and oops, there are four legs in there but it's actually two chickens!

The interesting thing about this shed kit is that I think you can make it any size you want. I love love the "playhouse'" coop, but I don't think that will fly around here. This would be like that on the side that faces me.
I also love the EGLU--does anybody have it? How do you like it? It's so pricey, but I notice there is like zero building and assembling--I like that.

Do the hens mind being jammed in there? It looks kind of tight.
