Could today be any worse? - some help please

Suggestion: I don't know if this will work, but I'd try caging the two little ones (or older chicks, if it's too cool or windy for the little ones) and take them to where you suspect there could be live chicks. Stay with them, of course, but a bit backed away, so they will cheep. I should think that if there are chicks, they will come to the peeping of others.
If you're sure it was a Black Bear, just noise will send it away; they're very timid unless they are faced with losing food, or have been fed by humans in the past. Bang some pans, yell, blow off a few "party poppers." We camp in Black Bear areas all the time; no problems if you NEVER bring food in your tent. Only if there is an open dump, unsecured trashcans, or dumb.... people who feed them to get a photo do they become a problem; otherwise they RUN when they see you. Of course, any mom will defend her cubs, so never get between them.
So very sorry about your chicks. Hope you find more alive.

BEARS! Ermahgerd!!!!!!!!! Bears terrify me. I mean how can you predator proof against something so strong! My aunt suspects a bear chewed through her metal garage door to get at a chicken that got locked in there one night. She's a rocks throw from my house.

Chicks naturally roost just like full grown chickens. If you've got bushes near by check in them to see if she may be perched on a branch. Scatter around some chick food and see if she takes the bait? Check any water sources you may have.
