Hello Everyone!
My husband and I are brand new to being chicken parents- we will be picking up our 1 week old chicks on June 25. We are taking a chicken keeping class at Love Apple Farm in Scott's Valley, CA. Between the class and all we are reading here, hopefully we will be prepared for our adventure into Backyard Chickens!

Hi Jerie and
welcome-byc.gif
- glad that you have joined us.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre, which will hopefully compliment your classes -
https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

This link may help you for the moment.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you. Just tell peeps where you live and you’ll be greeted by someone in your area who will, no doubt, point you in the direction of your state thread.

All the best
CT

Thanks CT!
I have been poking around this site for a few months. Finally committed to getting chickens this past month. Hubby is working on the coop now. Thank goodness for BYC - we have learned so much already!!!

We brought our 4 babies home today! 10 days old- hatched 6/15/16.Total of 4- 2 Ameracauna, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Black Austrolop (pretty sure most of those spellings are wrong!)

Question for all of you long time chicken parents- is this behavior normal?
We got home about 2 1/2 hours ago- was just over 30 minute car ride. Only a few cheeps in the car. Put them in their brooder- using MHP - dipped their beaks in the horizontal nipple water- then put them under the MHP. Not a peep out of them. They are all laying with their necks stretched out "chin" on the ground - wings close to their bodies- not stretched out. They are not huddled together. Pulled them out about an hour ago- again water- and showed them the food- 2 of them ate.

Should they be sleeping this much- and is the stretched out neck normal? The buff orp has had her mouth slightly open when I have checked on them- but I wouldn't say she is panting. They can easily get out from under the MHP - the temp under it is 90.1 degrees F.

Can you tell I am a nervous new mom????
thoughts?
thanks!
