Countdown to Ducklings! [a Journal]

@askem , if you want them to be quieter at night you could use a brooder plate instead of a heatlamp. Chicks and ducklings will be much quieter at night if they don't have the light on. Brooders plates are much safer than bulbs and they use much less electricity. If you like the idea of a brooder plate, but don't want to spend that much on one you could make your own with a heating pad. @Blooie and @aart have lots of experience making them.

Thanks! So I should get rid of the feeder and switch to just a bowl?

Will they be unable to clean with the water bowl I have in there now? I don't have any empty containers right now that I could cut up like that for water, but I'm sure I could get some in a few days when we finish off our cottage cheese.
I used that same type water dispenser with a coolwhip lip slipped over the rim.

Two Pekins :) I'm in Florida so they're the only legal types. In a few months/year or so we're moving to Arizona and I hope to get some Cayuga's!
Me too. Sticking with Pekins.
You can have way more types of ducks in Florida. I live in Florida as well and have Rouen, Swedish, Pekin. Also i know many people who have different breeds than Pekin in Florida. The only breeds you cant own are the wild types without a permit. All domestics are ok. If any permit is required though, it would be the free one.

Rouen, Swedish are ILLEGAL:oops: W/O A PERMIT.
You must have a class 3 permit. We talked directly with a State official. Plus you are granting them permission to access your property for inspection as per agreement upon signing the permit.

Here are a list that I could obtain if I wanted Uncle Sam walking around inspecting my property.

Unfortunately they all require a license unless they are Pekins. Any duck considered Anas platyrhynchos require a license. Rouens and Swedish are Anas platyrhynchos domesticus and require a license, unfortunately. I could probably apply for the license quite easily, I'm just not staying in Florida long enough to justify it.
It is because of our Hurricanes. The Hurricane displaces farm animals and mixes them with migratory birds, putting the natural breeding eco system in jeopardy.

That cool whip lid is a great idea! Thank you!

And that makes sense, I'm in the Tampa area and I've only lived here a year and a half so I've only experienced Irma. We had literally no damage at all, so I didn't consider what could happen!
