Today I caught 3 girls in one small nesting box and had a good laugh. That was 1 barred rock, 1 silkie and 1 polish all crammed in

Oh and I fed them scrambled eggs. There was a frenzy involved.

Absolutely, tell away

lol
During the summer I put a frozen 2 liter bottle in the nest boxes and they would cram in to lay by it lol, they were not old enough to lay yet so I didnt worry about that.
Mine love egg I make them eggs alot and mashed sweet potato oh they go crazy for that, lol

Awesome idea about the frozen bottle to cool them down! :)

My girls/guys will eat pretty much anything. I do think meat is their favourite. They get meat in the fall to boost protein (what ever leftovers we have) and they like that even more than egg!

Egg would be a close second though :)

Oh yes meat is the number one. DH is like " that is so wrong" lol People dont realize chickens are opportunistic feeders. The protein is much needed and I am always searching for ways to pump up protein when they need it. Mine love anything I make for them so far. they are so spoiled

I think my chickens are going to be spoiled rotten, they got toys yesterday...I can't wait for treats besides a spoonful of yogurt..I keep forgetting to take a pic of my dog, i will tomorrow lol

The chicken/meat thing does come off as wrong...the day I got my babies I was roasting a chicken and part of e just shook my head thinking about how stressed I was waiting for my babies...as I seasoned up this perdue oven roaster for dinner.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Husband leaves for work in a few hours and then it will be back to me being the crazy chicken lady lol and you both can share your funny stories with me...as long as you don't laugh at me spoiling the chicks...speaking of which, here is my story lol

So my husband walks in as I'm changing the bedding which means I had to pick up my cuties and sit them in the ' cleaning box' while I cleaned up the tank....so one of them was just too cute and I went to kiss the top of its head and give It a snuggle....my husband walked in and just went "did you just go to kiss the chicken?" I lied.....lol

Lol, too funny. I kiss mine on the head all the time and even my big turkeys outside get snuggles and kisses, yes we are the crazy chicken ladies lol

I wish I could have a turkey...I want to raise one for thanksgiving myself....funny pa is I don't eat turkey, but at least I'd know it had a good life before my family ate him.

:gig

I kiss them all the time. I can't help it. Especially chicks and my turkey hen Betty. She loves a kiss.

Everyone thinks chickens are diseased. It's a misconception. There are very few diseases you can get from them. You'd be more likely to get it from your dog kissing you.

I only eat my own roosters now. Before that, I was eating local free ranged meat kings. As soon as I got my first chickens, I could not support factory farms. It seemed so wrong.

People seem to think you get those mystery diseases just from owning them lol There are so many people who stop coming to my house because I own them ,,oh well their lose right? I am raising butcher chickens next spring, and going to contribute most my roos from my hatches to the meat pen. It is a fact of life and like sally said I love to know that they lived a good life.

What keeps you from having a turkey? I wanted to raise them for meat and breeding but I got so attached to their personalities that they are for eggs and breeding. I keep saying when I hatch from them next year I am going to throw a couple in the meat pen,,, we will see what happens lol

The first 5 I brought to my friend to butcher was very hard. We've done 3 more trips since then, and I'm feeling better and better about it. I cried when my mother in law cooked the first one. She cooked it from frozen and ruined the bird. I was really upset.

Anyway.. Just be prepared that free ranged birds are more tough than non-free ranged birds. They build up a lot of muscle from running around. However, the meat has so much more flavour. We are so used to eating cornish Xs from the grocery store that were injected with water and salt to modify the taste and appearance of the meat. It's not healthy.. It's sad.

I'd like to raise some poults for meat, but I doubt I will. I'll probably just sell them for breeding, as they are a very easy to sell breed. Anything that doesn't sell will be used for meat though.

I have had fresh chicken before, I grew up on my gmas farm, it has been ages though. I plan on raising them in a tractor so they are seperated from my birds and are not as easy to associate with.. I know it will still happen because you raised them and that is apart of you but I have to try because Ia m kind of on my own with this lol. I will slaughter myself which will be hard, but I want to do the whole process it is a religious thing so I gotta put my big girl panties on and do the job lol.
I will be selling poults next spring too and force a couple into the meat pen

yea it has to happen
